While many students struggle to achieve good SAT scores by taking extra courses online and offline, Jonathan Wai, in his article, “The SAT Needs to Be Harder”, in Education Week, suggests the test needs to be more difficult. That’s because college admissions counselors at selective schools like Stanford, Harvard, and Princeton find that many students who apply are getting perfect or near-perfect scores. These same students probably have taken the toughest high school courses and have perfect GPAs. Therefore, it’s very difficult for colleges to decide which students with such pristine records to select. Although colleges look at extra-curriculars, community service, etc., the SAT has been, at least in the past, a good way to tell students apart. Wai says that colleges, especially the most selective ones, should consider requiring the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) because it is actually like the SAT but more difficult. The GRE would allow very talented students to demonstrate their academic potential. Think about it. How would your juniors and seniors do on the GRE?
