Our students, especially the younger ones, have
grown up with the Internet. It’s a reality and a resource for them, and it’s
the way they communicate, but just how important do they think it is in our
lives? What follows are a few statements from student essays on digital
communication—statements that show that these students view the Internet as an
extremely powerful tool—not just a tool for kid to kid communication. “Using
the power of the Internet,” commented a ninth grade student, “all of us can
help shape the future and the world in which we live. We can touch people in
every corner of the world. If I grew up in my parents’ time, I could not have
my voice heard like I can today.” An
eighth grader felt just as strongly about the advantages of the Internet, “It
has brought a world of information and instant communication to our fingertips.
It is our future and we all need to embrace it.” According to a Grade 5
student, “The Internet is a great step forward for civilization and will be
seen in the future as a turning point comparable to the discovery of
electricity and the telegraph.” Another Grade 8 statement, “It’s like a light
we hold. That light is in our hands now and hold its power ….” I wonder if many adults view the Internet
like these students do? Our youth and their hope for the future—it’s beautiful
to see. (Look for more kids’ comments on technology in our Parenting
