Gizmodo calls it "amazing". PC World calls it "fun" and "innovative". Livescribe Pulse Smartpen is a pen, an audio recorder (stereo microphones), and a "handwriting capturer". With it, you can take notes, record what is going on while you are using the pen, listen to your recording that coordinates with your written notes, and see your written notes on your computer screen. The pen is available for both PC and Mac in 1GB (about $150) and 2GB (about $200) models. The Mac model offers the ability to export and share notes as PDF files, to export audio files to iTunes, and to change the on-screen colors of digital notes. You'll need special paper and ink for the Pulse, but it's possible to print your own paper, and you can buy cartridges at Livescribe, Amazon, and Target. Chances are, lots of college students, lawyers, kids with learning differences and business people will put these pens to use.
- But how about in pre-college classrooms? These pens should be useful to all students.
- But are there privacy issues involved? Technology is changing how we live and learn, but how do we keep up with it?
