We hear it all the time. Schools aren't working for lots of kids. Students aren't learning as they are expected to learn. To remedy this we've talked about smaller classes, smaller schools, games in learning, greater motivation, giving learning meaning, team teaching, cooperative learning-you name it. Today some schools are adding anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours to the school schedule in the hope of increasing learning. This movement is mostly among schools that are termed 'failing' under federal law, but should these schools be the only ones that increase the school day? Will simply adding time make a difference?
