Your students, who were under 19 years of age on December 31, 2010, are eligible to enter the Optimist International Essay Competition. The topic for the 2011-2012 contest is: “How My Positive Outlook Benefits My Community.” The essays must be between 700 and 800 words in length and follow the guidelines exactly. If your school hasn’t been notified about this competition, contact an Optimist Club in your region because the essays are first judged at the local level. District winners receive a $2,500 scholarship. For additional information, rules, and entry form, go to the Optimist International site and download the essay pdf. Entries are generally due by the end of January, but because deadlines may vary, be sure to check with your local chapter about its deadline.
