Operation Recycle - Disposing of Digital Equipment

Read this article for some practical ideas for recycling your unwanted digital devices as well as ideas for wiping them clean to protect your identity and privacy.

Going Green in Setauket!! At Setauket Elementary School, in East Setauket NY, Mrs. Castellano's 6th grade class has established a plastics recycling committee involving 12 students. This committee collects plastics every Friday afternoon from each classroom, office and faculty lounge in the building. Since the school is so large the committee collects over 1000 bottles per week. The main reason that this program has been a success is that the students involved take the recyclables home each Friday,with their parents permission, and use their home recycling system to dispose of the plastics in the proper manner. Currently our district does not provide the schools with plastic recycling dumpsters or bins. We are hoping that in the future we will have recycling dumpsters available at the school. The students enthusiasm in going "Green" in our school has been immeasurable. As a teacher, I feel very proud to oversee these dedicated students work for this wonderful cause. It's amazing how these young people care so deeply about their environment!!!

Mrs. Koerner's Class Kicks Off the New Year with Great Green Ideas!

We have been recycling and up-cycling with Terracycle and we have collected hundreds of Frito Lay chip bags, Capri Sun drink pouches, and Nabisco cookie wrappers!  In doing so, we have earned money for our charity, Earth's Birthday!

For the New Year, we have added recycling Elmer's Glue bottles and sticks (empty, of course!) to our collection.  This will also allow us to earn money for our charity.

We have chosen to create our own recycled bags for shopping.  We are ordering plain totes made from 100% recycled materials and we will create our own "Green" designs on them.  Now we do not have to choose paper or plastic when shopping and we are helping to keep the environment clean and "Green".

Our third graders have become exceptionally conscientious and they are great at reminding their peers to shut lights, computers, and to remember to carpool whenever possible. We have created posters to hang around our Fork Lane School (on, you guessed it, recycled paper!) to continue our promise to raise awareness.

Get Ready to Upcycle!

Fourth graders at Kramer Lane School in Bethpage are participating in the Schools Go Green project with News 12.  One of the service projects that we are involved in is "up-cycling" with Terracycle (www.terracycle.net).  The students have joined several "brigades" that involve collecting and sorting through several different types of food packaging (Frito Lay chip bags, Kashi, Oreo, Chips Ahoy packages).  The students then box these items and send them to Terracycle, where they are up- cycled and used to make green products such as school supplies, gardening products, and household cleaners and products.  For every bag or wrapper we collect, Terracycle donates money to our PTA or any charity of our choice.  The entire school is involved and the students are very excited!

            In addition, we are also recycling Elmer's glue bottles and glue sticks.  We are hoping to expand this to a school wide project in order to collect as much as possible.

            We are keeping waste from landfills, helping to protect our environment, and helping our school community and PTA at the same time!

At Marion G.Vedder Elementary School in North Babylon, Mrs. Kostulas' Kindergarten Class is on its way to Going Green. The children in our kindergarten class have been healthy snackers all year. In an effort to Go Green, the children have been bringing their healthy snacks in re-usable containers or no containers at all. This has been the perfect addition to our program. The children were already completing a "Snacking on A Rainbow" healthy eating chart by bringing in a fruit or a vegetable for snack. They get a new color chart every time they eat 20 healthy snacks. Now, they get a green star whenever their snack is healthy for the environment. We will continue this challenge for a while so it will become second nature to choose healthy snacks for our bodies and now healthy snacks for our environment!

Glenwood Landing Elementary ~ Green Footprint Project

 

Mrs. Cortez-Riggio’s class kicked off an event for their environmental project focusing on carbon emissions and its impact in relation to greenhouse gases and global warming.  

On January 22nd Glenwood Landing Elementary school will host its first annual "Green Day" event.  Students and teachers will participate in a variety of environment related activities.  It is the goal of this class to make their peers and the community aware of the environmental issues that are affecting their neighborhood and how they can make a difference.

Together, the class created a slogan which said, “S.T.O.P (Stop Turn Off Pollution)” and made a symbol comprised of a “Green Footprint” to help prevent carbon footprints from spreading. The students hand painted the logo onto charms for necklaces, key chains, and magnets and sold them at the Glenwood Landing Book Fair. All of the profits from the sale will be used to buy a Moon Sycamore tree which they hope to plant on school grounds to help reduce carbon emissions produced from nearby cars.

Currently, students are working on another environment project by collecting and analyzing data that studies the effects of carbon emissions on our air quality. Through this project, students hope to gain a greater sense of awareness towards human environment interactions on both a local and global level.

 

Mrs. Wenzel's third grade class is taking part in collecting past holiday cards in order to reuse them and make new ones. Our whole school is involved in this activity and many new 'recycled' cards will be sent to cheer up our troops.

Mrs. Cahill's Green Team

 

        The second graders in Mrs. Cahill's class have decided to ring in the New Year by going green! 

Their first green project was to set up a recycling center within their classroom to recycle paper.  Each week a different student in the class has the job as the "Paper Police".  It is their job to make sure everyone is recycling.  They take their job very seriously and even remind other students to recycle.

They have also signed up with www.terracycle.net to recycle Capri Sun Juice pouches and Elmer's glue. For each item that is recycled, $0.02 will be donated to Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in North Babylon.  They reached out to their peers at school and encouraged them to recycle the items as well.  The entire school has followed the example that has been set by these influential students and have been contributing to their recycling program.  The response was wonderful and they will be sending their first box next week!

The students are very excited to be part of the Green Team and look forward to a greener 2010!
